ShopBot Maintenance
ShopBots are mechanically pretty simple and have very few parts that require maintenance, but it's always a good idea to check over the tool before cutting your projects. It should only take a few minutes but could save you from having mis-cut parts. Here are some things to look at: (all links open in a new page).
Check every time tool is used:
General tool examination
- Do a quick walk around and check for loose bolts or nuts
- Look for deep cuts in table top, especially if using vacuum holddown. You can resurface with a large bit using the Tabletop Surfacing Virtual Tool in ShopBot Control software [TU]
- Look for worn or pinched spots in cables
- Remove any sawdust/material that's packed in v-groove rollers
Power train
- Power up control box and try to move gantry in all directions by hand and feel for any looseness
- If play is felt:
- lower motors from rack and examine pinion gears for wear. They are consumables and designed to wear before rack.
- check setscrews and make sure they are REALLY tight
- engage motor into rack by pushing up, then tighten cap screws with allen wrench
- a small amount of gear backlash can sometimes be felt...it's normal.
Check weekly:
Lubrication
- Check grease in rack
- Remove any grease that's contaminated with sawdust or other chips
- White grease is more "Clothes friendly" than black
- just light coat and wipe off excess...don't overdo
- can apply to pinion and let pinion spread it
